Vision: That Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish will be the source and resource for our community, endowed with helping parishioners develop physical, mental, spiritual, social awareness and well-being. While we are a new ministry (3 years old), in the past few years we have delivered new health and wellness initiatives to serve you and your families. Projects that we have completed or implemented are: purchased and installed an AED Defibrillator in the church; trained 10 AED/CPR volunteers for Parish community; established an annual blood drive; provided Health fairs, Health talks and Senior Caregiver Training & Information; provided talks on LTC, Financial Planning and Medicare; established a Cancer Support Group; and offered an exercise class - “Shazzy” Fitness.
Why do we do - what we do? Hear from some of our members:
Janet Ancheta: “As a dental hygienist, promoting good health and nutrition comes natural to me. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and expertise. Health Ministry provides me the opportunity to continue sharing what God has called me to do. I work with a wonderful group of healthcare professionals who are passionate about what they do and in the process I also learn new things. Together we are honored to share our blessings by helping and serving our Parish community.”
Melissa Bojorquez: “I felt a calling to serve our Parish community to share the skills and gifts that God has blessed me with in my career as a social worker/case manager in Health Care. I saw a need to bring health and community-based information and resources to our Parish community. God asked and I said “yes”.
Dory Clisham: “I have been blessed to have a career in the healthcare industry. I want to share that blessing by educating individuals on how they can deal with medical emergencies when they arise and how they can enrich their lives by living healthier.”
Rose Galera: “When I learned of our OLGC Health Ministry and its purpose to educate and create awareness for healthy living, I felt compelled to join, share and serve in the Ministry. Having been blessed with years of experience, education and passion in the cleaning service profession and believing of its values, for Health, Safety and Wellness, I felt that with the Health Ministry I could serve and give back for all the joy and blessings received to our OLGC community.”
Bernadette Ledesma: “I have been fortunate to be involved with the Health Ministry as my opportunity to share and support others with health information and opportunities for wellness, body, mind and spirit.”
Bob Mariano: “Health is a subject that is full of information as well as misinformation. The more I got into the what, why and how of Alzheimer’s, the disease afflicting my mother, the more I became interested in the overall aspects of health. There is so much information out there but no good way to channel it to the people I care about, mainly my new family since I moved back home to Hawaii from North Carolina. And that new family is the Parish of Our Lady of Good Counsel. God has given me certain talents that I’ve used throughout my life and I do not want to dishonor those gifts by keeping them to myself. So with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I hope to continue to help with the planning, manpower, presentations and dissemination of all aspects of Health so that we may help to create a more knowledgeable and healthier parish at OLGC.”
Jacob Pekelo: “Being a firefighter and EMT, it seemed like a natural choice to join a ministry that deals with Health & Safety.”
Flora Yee: “Health Ministry is the perfect ministry for me. Spreading God’s word in mind, spirit and body is very important and this ministry affords me to do just that. I will be teaching a weekly fitness class at OLGC! I’ve been blessed and so grateful to share my love of fitness, thanks to the support of this wonderful ministry.”
Cancer Support Group
Dominic Bojorquez: “When my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, I knew I had to do something. As a health professional, I had an objective view and only saw the science about cancer and not the person or the spirituality. It seemed that God was telling me to help out by using my nutrition, fitness, health knowledge, and to just be there to listen. I’m always excited to help and love our fellowship, as we support one another through our journey.”
