At the School Catholic School’s Week opening Mass, Father Pascual reminded us of this year’s theme: Learn, Serve, Lead and Succeed. We saw each of these principles enacted this week as our community engaged in activities designed to develop these qualities in our students. The week began with Mass on Monday morning hosted by the Fifth Grade Students. After hearing the Word of God and participating in the holy sacrifice of the Mass, the students returned to their classrooms to earn their pledges for the Spell-a-thon.
In the afternoon, our Bible Trivia Quiz tested everyone’s recollection and understanding of theological knowledge. There was a wonderful turn out for the Open House in the evening as we showcased our work and presented our
classrooms as a culmination of a successful two quarters work.
It was evident looking at the classrooms that our students are meeting their Student Learning Expectations. Tuesday was a wonderful day of service as the school community participated in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart. This fundraising activity aims to raise funds for heart health and to educate our students in leading a healthy, active lifestyle. The event was a fabulous display in peer teaching as older students assisted and worked together with our younger students to encourage participation.
The events of Wednesday’s Spirit Day can only be described as brilliant! Each class marched into the playground chanting their theme and holding their banner. As the classes fought for Gold, Silver and Bronze, the audience was treated to a display of singing and dancing.
The energy and enthusiasm was contagious and the Class of 2018 certainly enjoyed their final Spirit Day.
Thursday’s field trips were a huge success. In class groups, our students were exposed to a plethora of age appropriate experiences including trampolining at Hawai’i Academy, viewing the range of animals at the Honolulu Zoo, experiencing Marine Biology at the Living Art Marine Center and participating in service learning at St. Philomena Early Learning Center. Our goals of Faith, Knowledge and Service were met by each of these activities as we ended the
student week with a memorable field trip.
Our staff were treated to a day of reflection and influences on our pedagogy. The beautiful Sacred Hearts Academy was the site for our ACCE Conference beginning with Mass and ending with small group sessions in a variety of disciplines. As a staff, we thank our hosts and organizers for a rewarding and faith filled experience, reminding us why we choose to teach in a Catholic school.
When we think about what makes Catholic schools different, we remember that we seek to develop in our students’ certain qualities. These include obligations to the wider community and to champion values that unite society by promoting citizenship rooted in social justice. Special events like Catholic Schools Week help us to provide opportunities to emphasize personal and socialdevelopment as enduring values in an ever-changing world. May our OLGCS community continue to Learn, Serve, Lead and Succeed!
