Our Lady of Good Counsel Students are lifelong learners who read for enjoyment and learning, demonstrate basic knowledge in all subjects, and use study, research, and technology skills. OLGC School recognizes physical education and gardening as important subjects which also require the lifelong learning skills. Ms. Donna Daligcon has been the school’s physical education teacher for over 25 years and she’s always applied a challenging curriculum for students to learn physical education (PE). Aside from exercising, learning sportsmanship, and rules to sports games, students are given assignments which require study, research, and technology skills too! Ms. Daligcon integrates these basic student skills with her PE curriculum through projects like the Healthy Lifestyle Coast of Arms, current event reflections, Live Pono tasks. These assignments certainly assess the students’ lifelong learner abilities.
Most recently, Ms. Daligcon took on a new role as the school’s garden organizer. A few months ago, school parents helped to clear overgrown brush and weeds. Ms. Daligcon instantly noticed an area’s potential to be a wonderful garden space. She partnered with Mr. Rodel Eleccion to prepare a school garden. Together, they worked tirelessly to make sure the students of OLGC would have a plot of land where they can experience the benefits, joys, and pride to have a place for growing. After a couple months of preparation and planning, the first plants were placed following a special blessing by Father Pascual. PE classes are already being tasked to ‘malama’ or care for the land and becoming knowledgeable of healthy foods and how it can be grown properly in the garden. Students are quickly learning the physical demands to maintain a garden! It’s surely a workout! The school is proud to have this opportunity to grow and everyone looks forward to the fruits of labor and community.
