On October 29, 2014, Manana Neigborhood Park was renamed Shigeo Ushiro Park. Shown blessing the plaque is OLGC pastor, Fr. Pascual Abaya with Councilman Breene Harimoto, who proposed the renaming of the park and Elaine Ushiro.
The late Shigeo Ushiro, also known as “Mr. Pearl City” was a mover and shaker in the Manana area and the greater Pearl City community. Ushiro was instrumental in building a community pool at the Manana Park and spearheaded fundraisers for scholarships. In 1986, Ushiro was awarded Hawaii’s secondary School Principal of the Year while at Highlands Intermediate School. He was a board member of the Pearl City Community Association and the first president of the Manana Community Association. Ushiro was a recipient of the Kilohana Award for one of Hawaii’s outstanding volunteers.
According to Ushiro’s wife, Elaine, her husband completed RCIA at OLGC and participated in various church activities to include membership in Finance Committee, OLGC School Board, St. Francis Choir and Xavier Club. Elaine recalls her husband as a compassionate and people-oriented person. Shigeo Ushiro died on June 18, 2010 at age 78. (Reported by Bernadette V. Cabe)
