STEWARDSHIP CORNER - DIVINE INSPIRATION
by: Bernadette V. Cabe, Stewardship Committee Chairperson
Peter Nguyen’s creativity in designing the OLGC nativity scene started 12 years ago when upon seeing the nativity outside the church, began to ponder on how he could help tonot only redesign it but possibly relocate it inside the church.
With no art background or training, he could only sketchnativity designs mentally and not on paper. Abundio Cabe, his longtime helper, who for years, have been setting the stage for the nativity begged Peter for his sketch onpaper, but to no avail. According to Peter, what he would sketch in his head would turn out always different from the actual completed nativity scene. Whether this is a good thing or not, he calls it divine inspiration.
Peter starts contemplating on nativity designs around October and works on a particular one, 2-3 hours a day for a week, after the stage has been set-up by Abundio, and completes it in time for Misa de Gallo.
Initially, designing the nativity was all but a hobby for Peter, but as years went by it has become his yearly offeringto God as a reflection of the Holy Family and at the same time as a tribute to homeless families and children all overthe world; and his way to share his God-given time, talent and treasure to the church.
He thought about discontinuing to work on the nativity scene a year ago, but when he noticed that parishioners appreciatehis work, this got him motivated to continue on. “I am grateful when people pray in front the nativity”, says Peter.
Peter doesn’t keep photos of his previous work so as not to be infuenced by older designs. He wants his designs to be simple and as a reflection of the simplicity and the humility of the Holy Family.
