STEWARDSHIP CORNER - OUR YOUTHS GIVE BACK
by: Bernadette V. Cabe, Stewardship Committee Chairperson
In today’s society, influenced by consumerism, majority of children seem to want more and more for themselves. How do we teach our children to think of others by generously sharing their time and talent? Most children at OLGC are already doing some acts of stewardship without being aware of it.
In our parish we are blessed by many children who have learned to discover their gifts and have generously shared them with others such as the OLGC School children
who have shown their creativity in making greeting cards handed out to the homebound of our parish, the Altar Servers and the Children’s Choir, to name a few.
At the 6:30 a.m. Mass, we witness the talents of children, Saunders and Sylas Alaimalo and Ben Luafalealo who are members of the Samoan Choir. Mavis, the choir leader, has been a mentor for brothers, Saunders and Sylas. Seeing their mother lead the choir on Sundays served as an inspiration for both to be cantors and piano player. Saunders, 12 years old, started cantoring four years ago and for several months now has been accompanying the choir on the piano. “I feel comfortable about singing and playing the piano. To me it’s giving praise to the Lord,” says Saunders. Sylas, 10 years old, has been cantoring for three years. He received singing lessons from his mother. “ I feel nervous at first but when I start singing, I feel fine. This is one of the
ways I want to help my Mom and also give praise to God,” says Sylas. Ben Luafalealo, 12 years old, started cantoring last year. Mavis and his parents taught him to sing. “At
the beginning, I feel nervous when I sing but once I get started I’m very excited to sing for the Lord,” says Ben.
