Some of us are old enough to remember fasting from midnight in order to receive Holy Communion at morning Mass. It got more complicated when Christmas Mass at Midnight was introduced, so a three hour fast was instituted for evening Masses. Finally, because the church leaders felt it was so important for everyone to receive Holy Communion, the current rule of fast before communion was introduced to facilitate this. At this time it is necessary to fast for only one hour before receiving Holy Communion. So much easier that in years past.
