On the afternoon of Sunday, December 30, 2018, 27 enthusiastically dedicated volunteers from the Ohana Homebound Ministry, Perpetual Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament (PABS) and others, gathered in the OLGC Pastoral Center to prepare for Fr. Alfred Omar B. Guerrero’s Aloha Party. With the leadership of event organizers Rose Sumida and Donna Quillopo, a flurry of activities commenced, with only two hours until the official start of the event. A couple of hundred people attended this gala event, including Fr. Alfred’s family. The pastoral center was transformed into a ballroom, complete with beautiful centerpieces and a head table bedecked in floral arrangements and backdrop of shoji doors and lights.
The evening began with a traditional ‘oli by Kaitlyn White and welcoming message and opening prayer by our pastor, Fr. Pascual Abaya, IV. As Fr. Pascual said in his opening prayer, “We thank you, O Lord, for the gift of priesthood for our brother Alfred and pray that he will continue to be endowed with your Holy Spirit as he journeys to his new mission. May he continue to share Your Word to the people he will serve. We, as his church family, have treasured his presence
and his wisdom and talents.”
The program for Fr. Alfred was a representation of OLGC parishioners, who williingly share their talents in singing, dancing, acting and “sing off” style game. The Samoan youth did four numbers demonstrating their culture and showing their love for Fr. Alfred. They did a traditional “money dance and Fr. Alfred got up and danced to the delight of all.
In his closing prayer, Fr. Alfred thanked everyone for his party – especially Rose Sumida and Donna Quillopo – and all who attended to bid him well as he embarks on his new journey. Fr. Alfred’s new parish will be Newman Center Hawaii/Holy Spirit Parish and he begins, appropriately enough, on January 1, 2019. Once the formal program concluded, there was dancing of the Electric Slide and Cupid Shuffle, among others, as clean-up began. Again, special thanks to the scores of people who helped to make this gathering a resounding success. OLGC wishes Fr. Alfred all the best as he embarks on a new journey and we know that our paths will cross again. A hui hou, Fr. Alfred. Thanks for everything you have done to invigorate our parish, for all the laughter and great memories. God bless you abundantly always.
