Our Lady of Good Counsel School teachers are always finding ways to enrich students’ educational experiences beyond the four walls of their classrooms. Every member on staff is challenged to contribute to the team to provide students with a sense of community and real-life experiences. This field trip was very special because all staff and students journeyed to Hoa ‘Aina O Makaha in Waianae and participated in the Ke Ala Program.
We were blessed with the opportunity to learn through hands-on activities to respect the land, and to become aware of the delicate relationship between humans and their environment. Preschool-Grade 3 took part in the General Farm Tour which focuses on plant and animal life cycles. Grades 4-8 experienced the Hawaiiana Tour and e xplored the voyages of Polynesians, their traditions, the kinds of plants they brought with them and how they used them. The younger students enjoyed their time walking through the farm, searching for bunnies, feeding goats, sitting with bees, and walking with ducks. Our older students appreciated their time learning about farm life and planting. We are excited to extend what was introduced at the farm by beginning a school garden of our own!
